Well Type

Water for Cameroon currently constructs a well type we sometimes refer to as Type A. It has an Afridev hand pump and a rope and bucket mechanism. The Afridev has proven to be a very reliable pump.

The well has a lid that is normally locked. This provides access to the well for maintenance. It also allows access to the water at times when the pump is out of action.

At ground level there is a concrete pad. This is made in a way that keeps the place tidy and free from mud. Most importantly it prevents contamination from ground level.

There is a long process of engagement with the community before it is agreed that a well will be constructed in the community. This process helps to build a foundational relationship between the community and WfC or its partner. Though this is time consuming and has costs attached it is a very important part of the process.

The community is the owner of the process and of the well from start to finish. Water for Cameroon is merely the facilitator.

Discussions on responsibilities for all involved are talked over and agreed. When agreement is reached then contracts are signed and the work of construction can begin.

Training is given in setting up a water committee, well maintenance, and health promotion.

We request that the local community contribute 10% of the well’s cost in cash, plus benefits in kind such as accommodation and food for the Cameroonian construction team.
